Clinical Fellowship Year
(requirement for all foreign-trained
speech therapists)
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. How long does the CF process take? Generally
it would take about nine months or a school year but it
depends on the hours you work. If you were to work part
time it would take longer. All applicants for the
Certificates of Clinical Competence (CCC) are required
to successfully complete a clinical fellowship (CF) in
addition to the required academic and practicum
experiences and the national examination in
speech-language pathology.
2. What kinds of setting will I work in and will I
move around? With MTC because a majority of our
programs are school-based you would work in a school
system. It is much easier to stay in one location while
obtaining your CCC so as not to disturb or slow down the
process. Moving or traveling to different areas would
mean applying for new CF supervisors. We would keep you
in one location for 9 months with one CF supervisor
until you have completed your clinical fellowship year
(CFY).
3. Do I have a choice of locations? MTC has many
locations in the country where we employ therapists.
However we want to make sure your CFY is very productive
and you have the maximum support.
4. How is my CF supervisor determined? Once you
have decided on a location we will have speak to one of
our therapists who is experienced and has expressed
interest in or is experienced in supervising a CF. You
will have a lot of contact with your supervisor so we
want to make sure that we have someone who is close by
to where you are working and is easily accessible to
you.
5. How much time will I spend with my CF supervisor?
That will vary but the requirements are for minimum
of 8 hours a month either on site or on the phone. Your
CF supervisor is always available to answer your
questions by phone. You and your supervisor will have a
set schedule for the year of time that will be spend
together.
6. How to I apply for my CFY? MTC will assist you
in doing this. There is an application process that you
must fill out with ASHA and that your CF supervisor must
also sign. In most states there is a process at the
state level that may include being fingerprinted along
with some additional requirements.
